Chapter 14
âThe blue house,â I repeat as I cut through a narrow alley that runs between Main and Foxglove. Iâm expecting something muted and tasteful, a pale, sky blue shade, perhaps, or maybe a dark navy tone that blends in with the surroundings.
What Iâm not expecting is an electric neon blue thatâs so bright that it hurts to look at it. The house practically glows. Itâs like a beacon. Itâs probably visible from outer space.
I squint and rub my eyes.
The neighboring houses are in muted creams and neutral tones, with well manicured lawns and neat flower beds edging the walkways.
The Fortier house is the complete opposite. Wild roses have taken over the yard and flowering vines crawl along the fence. A few cats lounge on the cement steps that lead up to the porch, and they follow me with their eyes as I ascend.
Before I can ring the bell, the front door swings open of its own accord.
âCome in, come in,â a pleasant voice chirps.
I peer inside, expecting to see one of the elderly Fortier witches standing on the threshold, holding the door handle and waiting to greet me. But thereâs no one there.
Instead, the entryway opens into a brightly lit living room with area rugs covering the wood floors and large potted plants sitting in the corners. And thereâs yarn everywhere.
Literally.
There are baskets of yarn, bags of yarn, piles of yarn on the couch and matching loveseat. Rolled yarn balls litter the floor and rest on the end tables. Skeins waiting to be rolled cover the coffee table.
But thatâs not the strangest thing in the living room.
At least ten pairs of knitting needles clack away, floating in mid-air and attached to random balls of yarn, with smooth fabrics in varying shades of pink, yellow, and cream dangling beneath them. The needles are knitting at lightning speed and the fabrics hanging off of them grow right before my eyes, turning into adorable little hats and miniature pairs of socks, ruffled sweaters and cozy baby-sized blankets.
What in the world?
âCome on in,â the chirpy voice says again, âAnd shut the door behind you. Weâve been expecting you.â
Why am I not surprised.
I canât think of any good reason not to comply so I push the door shut and stand, transfixed, in the foyer, staring at the baby garments that are being created by seemingly phantom hands.
âUm, where are you?â I say, wondering if perhaps the Fortier sisters are ghosts and nobody thought to mention it to me. It wouldnât be the strangest thing thatâs happened since I arrived in Lupine Valley.
âWeâre in the kitchen,â the voice answers, âCome on back.â
I skirt around the frenzied activity, hugging the wall of the living area, and make my way to the arching doorway on the opposite side of the room. It opens into a bright, airy kitchen and dining area, and I finally lay eyes on the Fortier witches.
Theyâre a mismatched pair, one wispy and rail thin, the other rounded like a peach, and theyâre both
